Architecture Photobooks We Love

We have long been avid collectors of architecture photobooks, cherishing them not only for their visual and intellectual content but also for the sensory experiences they provide. We love the smell of the pages. The clever use of columns, margins and more. The satisfying weight the book in our hands.

Photography and graphic design are integral to our creative process, and architecture photobooks offer a unique convergence of these art forms. Here, we'd like to highlight two of our favorite photobooks that we keep coming back to. These photobooks, among many others in our collection, serve as constant reminders of the power of visual storytelling in architecture. They inspire us to push the boundaries of our own creativity.

Cape to Bluff

What makes Aotearoa New Zealand one of the most picturesque countries in the world? Its diverse landscape, ranging from snow-capped alps to windswept ocean shores within a few hundred kilomeres, demands a creative approach to home building that harmonises with the natural surroundings. Contemporary architects have risen to this challenge, drawing inspiration from traditional structures like the barn, whare, and bach to create modern interpretations.

Cape to Bluff showcases thirty remarkable houses situated in stunning and diverse locations, such as a crescent-moon-shaped bach in Tutukaka and a bivvy house overlooking Lake Wakatipu inspired by a gold miner’s hut. These homes exemplify the new era of New Zealand architecture, characterised by confidence, poetic design, and sustainability.

The photographs were shot over a 10-year period by the exceptional Simon Devitt. Devitt collaborated with writer Andrea Stevens and graphic designer Luke Scott to represent the stunning homes that line Aotearoa's landscape.

Shooting Space: Architecture in Contemporary Photography

'Shooting Space: Architecture in Contemporary Photography' by Elias Redstone is a gorgeous presentation of a diverse range of subjects and themes across the architecture and contemporary photography environments. Unfortunately the 2022 flood claimed our copy of the book, but it still serves as great inspiration here at the studio, both from a photography and graphic design perspective.
